History of Swift Current, Saskatchewan
The history of Swift Current is traced back through time with Swift Current Creek, flowing powerfully across 100 miles of prairie to the South Saskatchewan River. First Nations peoples knew this creek quite well and camped here for centuries. The first known name is believed to have come from the Cree, who referred to it as “kisiskâciwan” which means “it flows swiftly.”
With the fur trade and railroad established, the city settlement and businesses began to grow, attracting more settlers to make the west their new home.
Now, Swift Current is known for its abundance of cultural events and its hockey roots. Swift Current may be a small, friendly town with a population of 18,500, but the area is home to various festivals, art shows, museums, and sports venues.
Swift Current is located along the Trans-Canada Highway and can be reached within a day’s travel of all major centres in Western Canada. It’s two-and-a-half hours from Regina, three hours from Saskatoon and five hours from Calgary.
